The Hema Road Atlas ring bound caries all the features of the normally bound Road Atlas and is the same size but, because of the extra strain that the ring binding causes, the paperweight has been nearly doubled and the laminated cardboard cover is also doubled in thickness. This has resulted in a substantial book that is durable and able to stand up to the tough treatment we all know the Road Atlas gets in the car.

Australia Road and 4WD Atlas, in a large, 25x35cm, 136-page spiral-bound format, with an additional section covering the country’s most popular 4DW areas such as the Red Centre, the Top End or Cape York.

Each state is covered at a different scale depending on its size. Mapping is an enlargement of Hema’s Touring Atlases of Australia, with the same information but in larger print. All classes of roads from freeways to minor roads and 4WD tracks are shown, with intermediate driving distances on many routes and symbols indicating fuel supplies including outback stations. Named routes and highways characteristic of Australia’s road network, such as Great Ocean Road, the Savannah Way, Capricorn Highway, etc, are shown with their names. Railways and local airfields are also marked.

Other information includes locations of campsites and caravan parks, rest areas, and various places of interest. Colouring indicates national or regional parks and reserves, conservation areas, resource and scientific reserves, aboriginal land and UNESCO World Heritage areas. Topography is indicated by names of mountain ranges and selected spot heights. The maps have a latitude/longitude grid at intervals varying from 15’ to 2º according to the size of the area they cover.

The additional 4WD section covers the country’s most visited outback areas: Central Australia (NT/SA), the Pilbara and the Kimberley (WA), the Top End (NT), Cape York and Fraser Island (QLD) and Flinders Ranges (SA). Mapping at varying scales provides more information for travellers in such demanding terrain, with a wider range of symbols on accommodation, food and fuel supplies, medical emergency aid, etc. GPS waypoints are provided for important road junctions and landmarks.

For each state capital the atlas includes a street plan of the CBD area, annotated with places of interest and selected accommodation. Also included are a map of the city with its outer suburbs and a map of the wider region around it.

The atlas has an index and also includes an extensive list of the country’s national park with a table showing what facilities can be found there, plus a distance table
